The flag of Amsterdam, Netherlands, contains 3 bars of red, black, and red, with three white ex-crosses on the black bar.
History[]
The current flag of Amsterdam was officially adopted on February 5, 1975, but has been seen publicly since the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam. Before the flag had existed, it had been a coat of arms for the city.
Symbolism[]
The crosses are unknown for the certain meaning, but many people believe it represents the family arms for Persijn. It is also reported that the crosses represent the three plagues that have hit Amsterdam, namely water, fire and plague. The three crosses can be found on all kinds of buildings, in many logos and also on the Amsterdammertjes. Another theory is that the three crosses represent three fjords in the Amstel.
