The flag of Arizona is divided into two horizontal parts. The bottom section is blue. The upper section is divided into 13 rays alternating red and gold (starting at the hoist and going along clockwise), and the rays are of equal width starting in the center of the flag and going outward. In the center of the flag, covering a portion of both divisions, is a copper-colored five-pointed star. Surprisingly, the gold and copper colors are not defined by law.

Symbolism

Red and yellow are the major colors on the Spanish flag, resembling the fact that Arizona was discovered by the Spanish as a part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The thirteen rays represent the original thirteen colonies of the United States (Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia). Combined, the rays are symbolic of an Arizona sunset. The blue field of the lower half is "Liberty Blue", the exact shade of the blue field of the United States flag.
