The flag of Arkhangelskaya Oblast, Russia, is a sky-blue saltire upon white charged with the oblast coat of arms. The aspect ratio is 2:3.

Symbolism[]

The blue saltire upon white field is known as St. Andrew's flag in Russia, and is used as the naval ensign. Its use symbolises the oblast's status as the oldest maritime province of Russia. The sky blue is the colour of the armour of the Holy Archistrategus Michael, depicted on the oblast coat of arms.[2]

History[]

There were two older proposals for the oblast flag: sky-blue field charged with the coat of arms of the oblast and white saltire upon red field.

Until 2009, Arkhangelskaya Oblast was one of the two Russian regions (along with Pskovskaya Oblast) that did not have a flag.
