Former flag (1969-2011)[]

The former flag has the same design as the current, but with the seal different and much smaller. The flag was adopted in 1969, however it's uncertain whether it was official or not. The seal was designed by Albert Christen.

Symbolism[]

Aurora means “Dawn” in Latin, hence the rising sun, which also represents a rising community letting its light shine and making its voice heard throughout the Rocky Mountain Empire. The five stars stand for Home, Church, School, Business, and Industry, which the city considers essential to a healthy, progressive community. The city’s colors are blue and gold. The blue symbolizes the azure sky; the gold represents the minerals that made Colorado famous and resulted in its settling in the early days of the West. The seal was adopted in 1907 when the town of Fletcher changed its name to Aurora.[1]

2004 NAVA survey[]

The flag scored 3.36 / 104th out of 150 on the 2004 NAVA City Flag Survey, behind Kansas City, and tied with Grand Rapids.
