The flag of Brazil, also called Brasil, is green with a yellow diamond in the center of the flag. In the center of the diamond is a large blue circle. Inside the blue circle is a stylized version of the Brazilian night sky, with white five-pointed stars representing the stars. In the center of the blue circle is a white thick curved line, with the words "ORDEM E PROGRESSO" in green, on the banner.

Symbolism

Although it is frequently said and written that green background represent's Brazil's forests and yellow represents Brazil's wealth, these two colors, in the same pattern, are part of the Brazilian imperial family stem and flag . The 27 stars represent Brazil's 26 states and its Federal District. "ORDEM E PROGRESSO" is Portuguese (the official language of Brazil) for "ORDER AND PROGRESS".

The flag's colors are borrowed from the Brazilian coat of arms, minus red.

History

Up until its' independence in 1822, Brazil was once a colony of Portugal, so its' flag was nothing more than the Portuguese flag. The first version of the flag of Brazil was a royal standard by the Prince Royal of the colony. It consisted of a green field, with a yellow rhombus that stretches to the sides of the flag, and the imperial coat of arms inside the rhombus.

After the declaration of independence, the royal standard would be modified to become the flag of the country. The coat of arms would be modified in 1822, and after the creation of Paraná, a 20^th star would be added in 1853.

In 1889, Emperor Pedro II would be deposed by Deodoro da Fonseca, whom which the latter would proclaim the country a republic, and as a result came with a new flag. Ruy Barbosa would propose a new flag for the republic, which consisted of thirteen green and yellow stripes with a blue canton containing twenty-one white stars.

Flown for five days on November 1889, it would later be vetoed by Fonseca, who claimed the flag looked too similar to another flag.

Instead, a new flag would be adopted on the 19^th of November, which resembled the old imperial flag (in accordance to the suggestion of Fonseca, who later accepted it). The flag shrinks the rhombus, and replaces the coat of arms with a constellation over a blue globe, containing the positivist motto. Since then, the constellation would later be modified in 1960, 1968 and 1992, to represent newly created states.
