The flag of the British Indian Ocean Territory is similar to the flags of other British dependencies and colonies as it has the Union Flag in the upper hoist-side corner. The flag has a white background with six blue, wavy horizontal stripes, and a palm tree on the hoist with a crown over it. The flag was intended to be used by the Commissioner but had gained semi-official status as a territorial flag for use on land.

Symbolism

The palm tree and crown are symbols of the Indian Ocean Territory. The blue and white wavy stripes represent the Indian Ocean, and their existence is a break from the traditional practice of flags of British colonies or former colonies.
