The fasces that the woman is holding are a traditional emblem of unity, while its' six rods represent Brooklyn's original six towns under New Netherland. The phrase "Een Draght Macht Maght" translates to English as "Unity Makes Strength". The woman is "Miss Brooklyn", a popular figure during the city's consolidation. Blue and yellow are the colors of the borough.
