The flag of Córdoba, Argentina is a horizontal tricolor of red, white, and yellow, with a Jesuit sun in the middle. The flag was adopted on November 23, 2023, and was designed by Agustín Luján Díaz.[1]
Symbolism[]
The flag is called "Hornero de La Docta", based on Argentina's national bird and the city's nickname "La Docta" ("the learned one") due to its prestigious and historic universities.
The red alludes to the courage, strength and potential of the Cordoban people since their birth. It also refers to the original communities of the Comechingones of the city, pre-existing the Spanish conquest.
The white represents coexistence in harmony, nourished by various internal and external migratory currents throughout history. It also symbolizes Córdoba's position as the geographic and strategic center of the province, the nation and Mercosur.
The yellow shows the joy, liveliness and splendid energy of the people of Córdoba. It is found embedded in the city's shield, originally gold in color.
The Jesuit sun with its 32 rays (16 straight and 16 wavy) arranged alternately, coincide graphically with the May Sun of the national flag. It reflects the political, social, cultural, educational and religious importance of the Jesuits in the history of La Docta.[2]
