The flag of the Spanish Autonomous City of Ceuta uses the gyronny from the flag of Lisbon, with the Portuguese coat of arms in the centre.
History[]
the flag originally flown was the flag of the city of Lisbon, which was first flown when the Portuguese conquered the city of Ceuta in 1415. the coat of arms of Portugal was adopted as the coat of arms in place of the coat of arms of Lisbon because of a tradition for Portuguese cities and towns to adopt the national coat of arms.
Symbolism[]
The flags' Portuguese origin represents how the historic city is in Portuguese history, as Ceuta was the first of many overseas settlements belonging to Portugal. although the majority of the cities inhabitants are ethnic Spaniards, one of the terms of the treaty of Lisbon, which is almost 350 years old, is that Ceuta would keep the flag used during the Portuguese years.
Flag Variant[]
Like in Portuguese cities, there are 2 versions of the flag, one with the coat of arms and one without. both are seen used all over the city.
