The flag of Chuquisaca, Bolivia features a burgundy Red Cross in the military Spanish style, based on the banner of the Charcas Audiency. This resembles that Chuquisaca was colonised by the Spanish Empire. Behind it is a pure white background that complements well with the Spanish Red Cross. This flag was adopted on the 30th October 1945 by Prefecture Decree.

Symbolism[]

The meaning of the Chuquisaca flag is straightforward and is symbolic to the department. The white represents peace, purity and faith of the region and the red symbolises the blood of all the people.

Variations[]

Most variations are due to an unclear description of the Chuquisaca flag although it is not always the case.

Simple Variation[]

This variation is a simplification on the normal Chuquisaca flag; the burgundy Red Cross in the military Spanish style without its gnarls and the same white background with the same meaning and symbolism. This is also an official flag as it was infront of the presidential palace of La Paz.

Four Gnarls Variation[]

There are two differences with the official version such as the most obvious one and the reason for the name of this variation, the four gnarls which points to the flags’ hoist when flying. The other difference is that the cross is slightly thinner and sightings of this flag was only in a parade but still a variation.

Chevron Space Variation[]

This variation has a thinner cross and no gnarls. Instead, it has a chevron, negative space. All of the arrows points at the hoist of where the flag flies. This flag was seen as an illustration of provincial costumes.

K Space Variation[]

This variation is roughly the same as the Chevron Space Variation apart from the red arrows creating a k shaped negative shape instead of a chevron.

Long Cross and Arrows Variation[]

Compared to the normal flag, this variation is quite different. The cross is thinner, has no gnarls and has arrows pointing at the corners of the flags but the arrows don’t touch the corners.

Small Cross and Arrows Variation[]

As the red cross is small, the white background stands out. The red cross is a Greek one with arrowheads sticking out of each point.

The variations all have the same, unknown proportion of the original flag as well as the red and white shades.
