The flag of Delaware is "colonial blue"[3] with a buff-coloured symmetrical diamond longer than it is tall, in the center of the flag, with a stylized version of the Delaware state coat of arms in the center of the diamond. Underneath the diamond, near the bottom of the flag, is the date, in white, "DECEMBER 7, 1787".
Symbolism[]
"DECEMBER 7, 1787" is the day that Delaware became the first state of the United States. The coat of arms represents the state of Delaware. The diamond represents the state's nickname, "The Diamond State". Buff and colonial blue are taken from the general uniform of George Washington.
History[]
During the Revolutionary War, troops from Delaware carried distinctive colors, but an official state flag was not adopted until July 24, 1913. The original significance of the diamond shape is unclear, though it may have been selected purely for its unique design.[4]
