The flag of Des Moines, Iowa, is a blue background with 3 arched bridges, with a red trapezoid on the hoist side.

Symbolism[]

The three white "bridges" across the flag symbolize the Grand, Locust, and Walnut Street bridges at the Des Moines River, while the blue background represents the great Racoon and river's water which made the city's location a perfect place for its' capital city. The red trapezoid represents the city, and its' passionate residents.

The flag scored 7.77 / 14th out of 150 on the 2004 NAVA survey, behind San Antonio, and ahead of Richmond.

The flag scored 6.43 / 59th out of 150, a B+ on the 2022 NAVA survey, behind Plainfield, and ahead of Baldwin City.

Logo flag[]

Des Moines (Logo Flag)

The logo flag, is of course, the city's logo on a white background. The arched architecture of spans crossing the Des Moines River was inspired by the former flag that flew from 1974 to 2008. It lasted from 2008 to 2019, following a campaign spearheaded by a local couple.

Trivia[]

  • Des Moines is the only one of the three cities that replaced their old flag design, then brought it back, the other two being Anaheim, with its' 2018 flag lasting for 2 years, and Scottsdale, with its' 2019 flag lasting for 15 days (February 19 - March 5).
