The flag of Duluth, Minnesota, is a blue field with an 8-pointed star, with a green wave outlined in white, and under it is dark blue.

Symbolism[]

The colors in the flag represent the clear blue of the sky, refreshing water of Lake Superior, deep green of the north woods, and snowy winters, the design symbolizes Thompson Hill, Enger Hill and Hawk’s Ridge while the star symbolizes the Zenith City of the North.

2022 NAVA survey[]

The flag reached 12th out of 312 on the 2022 NAVA City Flag Survey, with a score of 7.44, and a grade of an A, behind Pocatello and tied with Sunnyvale, Yorba Linda, and South Bend.

The flag is a green background with a white-outlined/blue triangle, with 2 blue fleur-de-lis on the canton and bottom-fly, and the city's seal in the center. The flag was adopted on October 1, 1979, and its proportions were 3:5 and 4:6.

Symbolism[]

The green, white, and blue represent Duluth's woods, snow, and streams which were home to the area's original Native Americans. The colors were also selected because they were widely used by Spirit Mountain, the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA), as well as the municipal government. The cross formed by the blue and white stripes represents many of the European flags, particularly those of Scandinavia, recognizing the foundation and settlement of the area by those cultures. The fleur-de-lis represent those displayed on the royal French flag which explorer Greysolon Sieur DuLhut, for whom the city is named- carried with him during his expedition to the Lake Superior area.[1]
