The flag of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland consists of three horizontal bands of blue (top), red (triple width), and blue; the red band is edged in yellow; centered in the red band is a large black and white shield covering two spears and a staff decorated with feather tassels, all placed horizontally.
The flag was hoisted for the first time on 25 April 1967 on the occasion of the pledge of the oath by King Sobhuza II.
Symbolism[]
- Red stands for the battles of the past.
- Blue stands for peace and stability.
- Yellow stands for the natural resources the country possesses.
- The traditional Swazi shield and two spears symbolise protection from the country's enemies. The colours of the shield show that white and black people live in peaceful coexistence in Eswatini.
- The flag is based on one given by King Sobhuza II to the Swazi Pioneer Corps in 1941.
