French Guiana has no official flag of its own, and uses none other than the French flag. There was a commonly used flag, which consisted of a diagonal bicolor of yellow and green with a red star in the center. It was originally designed in the 1960s, and adopted by the local trade union UTG in 1967. It was unilaterally adopted by the general council (departmental council) on January 29, 2010. However, the flag was not recognized by the superior regional council.

The yellow and green flag remained in use by the departmental council until 2015, when the two councils were disbanded and the Territorial Collectivity of Guyane was created. The new collectivity uses a white field with its logo, which depicts a stylised map of the region and a bow with four arrows.

The green and yellow flag is however still used by the French Guiana national football team and is still commonly flown by civilians.

Symbolism[]

The green represents the forests, the yellow represents gold and other minerals of the region, and the red star represents socialism.
