The flag of Fresno, California, is a vertical tricolor of brown, blue, and green. In the brown part, is a white gear shape, in the blue part, a green plant shape separating the word "FRESNO" in half, and in the green part, a yellow sun shape inside a white circle.

Symbolism[]

Brown represents the Central Valley's soil, Light blue symbolizes the clear blue skies of Fresno’s mild climate. The green is for the green fields and trees around Fresno. The gear symbolizes Fresno’s status as the agribusiness leader of the nation, as well as the great industrial future of the city. The leaf recalls the source of the city’s name, the Spanish fresno (“ash tree”). The city’s name in brown reflects its agricultural heritage. The sun denotes the giver of life to the fields and orchards that surround Fresno. It is also a reminder of the endless sunny days of the city. The white of the gear and sun’s field symbolizes the snow of the Sierra Nevada, from which the city derives its water.[1]

The flag scored 5.12 / 36th out of 150 on the 2004 NAVA survey, behind San Francisco, and above New York City.
