The flag of Hawaii has the Union Jack in its canton, with eight equal horizontal stripes, representing the eight major Hawaiian Islands, taking up the rest of the flag, alternating white, red, and blue, starting at the top of the flag. It is the only U.S. state flag to feature the Union Jack.

Symbolism[]

The eight stripes represent the eight major islands of the Hawaiian archipelago. Red, white, and blue are the colors of the flag of the United States. The Union Jack represents Hawaii's friendship with the United Kingdom.[2]

The flag's stripes are depicted on the shield on the seal/coat of arms of Hawaii.

Trivia[]

  • King Kamehameha I originally had the flag commissioned, and the current design is almost identical to that original design. The original idea was during the time of the War of 1812, Kamehameha was concerned about flying a flag with would alienate either the United Kingdom or the United States. This design was seen as a compromise between the flags of those two warring countries.
  • The Hawaiian flag is used on the seal/coat of arms of Hawaii.
