The flag of Indonesia consists of two equal horizontal bands, red (top) and white (bottom) with an overall ratio of 2:3.

Symbolism[]

  • The red stands for courage, for human's body or physical life.
  • The white stands for purity. for human's soul or spiritual life.

Together these colours stand for a complete human being.

The flag is based on the flag of Majapahit Empire (9 alternating horizontal stripes of red and white). Alternative version states that the nationalists made this flag after they tore away the blue stripe from the flag of the Netherlands.
