The star represents the city's status as the capital of Mississippi. The blue field behind the star denotes the city’s position on the Pearl River. The white cross symbolizes the city as the “Crossroads of the South”.[1]

Former flag (1978-1993)[]
The former flag of Jackson, Mississippi, is a white background with a red profile of Andrew Jackson with the word "1822" written in white. At the top and bottom are the words "JACKSON" and "MISSISSIPPI" in blue.
The flag was adopted on February 14, 1978, and relinquished on January 12, 1993.
