Not to be confused with the Liberian county of Maryland. |
The flag of Maryland is a quarterly with the upper hoist and lower fly cantons consisting of the same design (six vertical equal stripes alternating yellow and black from the left, with a diagonal stripe going from the upper left corner of the canton to the lower right corner of the canton, with the colors counterchanged), and the lower hoist and upper fly cantons having the same design (a quartered canton, with white in the upper left and lower right sections, and red in the lower left and upper right sections, and in the center of the canton is a Greek cross, counterchanged). It combines the banner of George Calvert and the flag of the Maryland secessionist movement during the civil war.
