The flag of Mississippi consists of 5 unequal horizontal stripes of red (2), yellow (2), and blue (1). In the center is a magnolia surrounded by 21 stars and the words "IN GOD WE TRUST".

Symbolism

The circle of twenty stars represents Mississippi as the 20th state. The gold five-pointed star represents the indigenous Native American tribes of the land that would later become Mississippi. The blue in the main field of the flag echoes the blue of the American flag, representing vigilance, justice, perseverance, while the bands of red represent hardiness and valor. The gold lines and the gold stamen of the New Magnolia are a nod to the rich cultural history of Mississippi, specifically the visual arts, literature, music, and performing arts in the state.

Previous design

The previous flag of Mississippi was a horizontal tricolor of red, white, and blue with the Confederate battle flag on the top-left canton, representing the fact that Mississippi was a member of the Confederate States of America.

Trivia

• On June 28, 2020, the Mississippi State Legislature passed a bill to replace the flag. The bill was signed by the Governor on June 30, 2020.
