The flag of New Jersey is a buff background with a stylized version of the New Jersey state coat of arms in the center of the flag.
Symbolism[]
The coat of arms represents New Jersey. The buff color is taken from a section of George Washington's general uniform.
The three plows in the coat of arms represent the fact that New Jersey is the third state in statehood order.
The flag’s design is heavily based on the coat of arms created in 1777 by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a Swiss-born artist who also contributed to the Great Seal of the United States.
