The civil flag of North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen), a federal land of Germany, is a tricolour of green (upper stripe), white, and red.
The state flag is the same, but with the coat of arms in the center.
Symbolism[]
The flag is a combination of the colours of the preceding Prussian provinces: Rhine Province (green over white) and Westphalia (white over red). According to the German heraldic tradition, the colors of the flag coincide with the colors of the coat of arms.
History[]
The land of North-Rhine Westphalia was established in 1946. Its current flag had been in use since 1948 although it was not formally established until 1953.
