The flag of Prince Edward Island is a rectangular version of the Prince Edward Island provincial shield of arms, with a border going around the flag from the upper hoist to the upper fly to the lower fly to the lower hoist. The border is divided into 18 sections, alternating, from the canton, red and white.
Symbolism[]
The flag's design is taken from the Prince Edward Island shield of arms.
History[]
The flag was established by "An Act Respecting the Provincial Flag", which received Royal Assent on March 24, 1964. Its description, including specifications for size and proportions, is contained in the Laws of Prince Edward Island, Provincial Flag Act (R.S.P.E.I. 1988, Cap. P-27).
Subsequent amendments were made to harmonize the flag’s design with updates to the coat of arms under the Coat of Arms Act, which came into force on December 13, 2002, following a warrant issued by the Governor General on April 26, 2002.[2]
