The rainbow flag, sometimes called the "LGBT/LGBTQ+ pride flag", is a multicolored flag consisting of the colors of the rainbow. The designs differ, but many of the colors are based on the six spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple that compose the visible light spectrum.

Symbolism[]

The original eight-stripe flag, designed in 1978, had a meaning for each color: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. In March 2017, Gilbert Baker created a nine-stripe version of his original flag, adding a lavender stripe on top, which represents diversity. Several variations also add black and brown to represent people of color, as well as light blue, pink, and white for the transgender community, with the colors taken from the flag, one variation also adds the intersex flag.
