The flag of Raleigh, North Carolina, is a red-white-red triband, with the city's seal in the obverse side, and a modified version of the coat of arms of Sir Walter Raleigh in the reverse side.
The flag of Raleigh is one of few flags in the United States to have a different obverse and reverse.
Symbolism[]
The red-white-red triband is a reference to Walter Raleigh, who the city was named after, as red and white were the colors of his arms.
The Raleigh city seal composes of:
- An oak tree, and oak leaves with gold acorns on the left and right - a reference to Raleigh's nickname "City of Oaks".
- The text reading "ESTABLISHED 1792" under the tree - the time when land in Wake County was purchased for a planned capital. 1792 was also the year the state's General Assembly named the city "Raleigh".[1]
2004 NAVA survey[]
The flag scored 4.48 / 56th out of 150 on the 2004 NAVA City Flag Survey, behind Houston, and ahead of San Diego.
