Symbolism[]
The three fleur-de-lis, the Maltese cross, and the three golden crowns represent Saint Barthelemy's history as a colony, first ruled by the Kingdom of France, then the Knights of St. John/Order of Malta, and then the Kingdom of Sweden, before coming back to French rule. The mural crown is an ancient symbol of the Greek gods protecting the city, the 2 pelicans represent the country's fauna, written at the bottom is the local name of the island.[1]
