The flag of the city of San Diego, California, is an equal vertical tricolor of red, white, and golden yellow, with a stylized version of the San Diego city seal in the center of the flag, entirely inside the white stripe. Semicircling below the city seal, in black, is the year "1542".
Symbolism[]
The city seal represents the city of San Diego and its citizens. 1542 is the year that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the current San Diego area for Spain, whose flag's colors, red and yellow, are represented on the San Diego city flag.
2004 NAVA survey[]
The flag scored 4.47 / 57th out of 150 on the 2004 NAVA City Flag Survey, behind Raleigh, and ahead of Arlington.
