The flag of the city and county of San Francisco, California, is a white background bordered in yellow. In the center is a phoenix spreading its' wings from a red shape fimbriated in black and yellow. On the bottom is a scroll reading "ORO EN PAZ - FIERRO - EN GUERRA", with the words "SAN FRANCISCO" in blue.
Symbolism[]
The motto " ORO EN PAZ - FIERRO - EN GUERRA" predates to the Spanish-American war, apearing on a seal dating from 1859 (perhaps anticipating the Civil War). Others attribute the origin to Don Quixote and his instructions to Sancho Panza.[2] The phoenix rising is meant to symbolizes the city’s resurgence from the 1906 earthquake and fires.
