The flag of South Vietnam, or the Republic of Vietnam is a yellow background with three red horizontal stripes through the middle. This flag is common among members of the Vietnamese diaspora, alongside the communist flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

History[]

The flag was first introduced by the Provisional Central Government of Vietnam in 1948, later serving as the flag of the State of Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam.

Symbolism[]

The red stripes are emblematic of the common blood running through northern, central, and southern Vietnam.

Ban on the flag[]

Usage of the South Vietnamese flag is banned by Vietnam's National Assembly as it is seen as sedition against the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The applicable law is Article 117 of the 2015 Criminal Code.[1]
