Pan-Arab Colours[]

According to the Pan-Arab Colours category, this flag should be in the category if it has green, red, white, and black, but the Egyptian flag doesn't have any green. I'm going to remove Egypt from this category for now, unless it somehow does fall into the category. Although I agree that Egypt is Pan-Arab (something like that), I'm just a little confused about the colours and how it falls into the Pan-Arab category. Could someone please explain this to me? --FLAGFREAK 19:17, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, you can divide the Pan-Arab flags into two categories: those based on the Arab Revolt Flag (e.g. Jordan, the Sahrawi Republic, Kuwait and the former Hashemite kingdoms) and those based on the Arab Liberation flag. The first one features all of the colours and stems from the Arab revolts against the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century . The latter stems from when the Egyptians overthrew their last monarch in 1953 and is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and black. Initially there were also two green stars in the centre (the flag was identical to that of contemporary Syria) and as such contained all Pan-Arab colours, later these stars were removed in favour of the eagle of Saladin. As the Egyptian tricolour also inspired many Arab countries in need of a flag there are now also two flags of Pan-Arabic origin that do not contain any green (currently Yemen and Egypt, though the flags of Iraq and Syria also use the red, white, black flag, albeit with green symbols in the centre). Because the Egyptian flag is of Pan-Arabic origin and is actually the first one of the second kind I felt it should be included in the category. --Karsten vK Groningenicon (talk) 13:27, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
How about new articles for all of Egypt's previous flags, and then those could be put into the category? --FLAGFREAK 14:38, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
I think both the current as the former flags of Egypt (excluding the one used when the country was a kingdom) should be in the category: FOTW mentions both of the types as being Pan-Arab [1] so I suppose they are equally valid. --Karsten vK Groningenicon (talk) 17:13, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, I guess we're gonna need some rules for those categories. I'll send you a draft of a page. In the meantime, we'll use your suggestion. ;-) --FLAGFREAK 21:16, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, please see the Category:Colour families page for my proposal on the organization of the categories. Tell me what you think. :-) --FLAGFREAK 21:21, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
