The flag of Texas, also called the Lone Star Flag, consists of a blue vertical stripe at the hoist, and two equal horizontal stripes in the remaining area, the top stripe white, and the bottom stripe red. The blue stripe is one-third the length of the flag. In the center of the blue stripe is a white five-pointed star.

The true designer of the flag remains unidentified. Some suggest that Charles B. Stewart may have designed the flag or created the illustration used by the Third Congress when adopting the legislation for it. However, Stewart's drawing appears to closely resemble a tracing of Peter Krag's artwork, including the inverted signature of President Lamar.

The current flag was officially adopted on January 25, 1839. The current, revised colors were re-adopted on August 31, 1933.

Symbolism[]

The blue stands for loyalty, white for purity, and red for bravery, the single (lone) star symbolizes the state's fight for independence, and represents ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for God, State, and Country.

The red and white stripes trace back to the Republic of Fredonia. Formed through an alliance between Anglo settlers and Native American tribes, its flag featured red and white stripes to represent these two groups. Though the rebellion failed, it inspired the Texas Revolution.

The "lone star" predates the flag and symbolized Texan solidarity during the push for independence from Mexico. A similar star appeared on the "Burnet Flag," influenced by the Republic of West Florida's flag. Today, the lone star symbolizes Texas' independent spirit and is the origin of its nickname, "The Lone Star State."
