The flag of The Gambia consists of five horzontal stripes coloured red, white, blue, white, and green.
Symbolism[]
The red represents the savannahs, the blue represents the Gambia River, and the green represents the forests.[4]
History[]
Up until 1965, The Gambia was a colony of the United Kingdom, once under the British West Africa Settlements, before its' dissolution in 1850 and 1888. So The Gambia's flags were a blue ensign, with an emblem of an elephant on the African landscape, and the words "British West Africa Settlements" in red below the elephant. In 1816, the words "British West Africa Settlements" were replaced by a red "G."
