---|---|
red | sacrifice of the Christ's blood |
white | purity [2] |
cross | cross which the Christ was martyred upon |
History[]
In the 1870s, the Tongan flag design was based on an idea from a Tongan king George Tupou I. It was originally just a red couped cross on a white background, but as this resembled the flag of the Red Cross organization, the red field was added with the red cross placed in a white canton.
