The flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is red with a large yellow five-pointed star in the center.[2]
Symbolism[]
The red symbolizes the communist revolution, and the yellow star represents the Vietnamese people, and the 5 points symbolizes the 5 classes of the Vietnamese people, intellectuals, farmers, workers, businessmen and military.
History[]
The original flag first appeared in 1940 during the 1940 Cochinchina uprising (Nam Kỳ khởi nghĩa). The flag was used by Viet Minh in order to encourage Vietnamese people to fight for their independence. During the August Revolution (Cách mạng tháng Tám), Vietnamese people under the Viet Minh's leadership used the original flag. On September 2, 1945, the flag appeared in the Declaration of Independence of Vietnam ceremony and on September 5 became the official national flag of Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). The flag was then redesigned in 1955, which is still used by now.
