The flag of Walla Walla, Washington, is a sky blue background with a yellow circle overlapping between some green shapes that look like hills, with blue lines passing down everywhere.

Symbolism[]

The lines prominent in this design are representative of Walla Walla's notorious rolling hills, Blue Mountains, and many streams. The drastic yellow circle, whose color comes from the Washington state flag's emblem, symbolizes the rising sun. It both adds body to the hills by peaking over them and casting a reflection in interpretative waters below. The green in the hills and blue in the sky are also pulled straight from the Washington state flag.

2022 NAVA survey[]

The flag reached 100th of 312 on the 2022 NAVA City Flag Survey, with a score of 5.04 / a C+, behind Haysville, and ahead of Lexington-Fayette.

Former flag (2008-2021)[]

The former flag is the city's seal on a blue background. The seal consists of a black circle fimbriated in yellow, with waves under a tree behind a 1/2 circle. On the top is the words "CITY OF WALLA WALLA", and on the bottom is the word "Est. 1862".

Redesign[]

The Walla Walla Flag Contest was held in 2021 as part of designing a new symbolic flag for the city. The contest officially opened for submission on May 15, 2021, and called upon local artists and residents to submit a flag that embodies Walla Walla's culture and history. The July 16, 2021, deadline for submission was followed by a public vote from August 9 to August 15, 2021, when residents were able to have their voice heard in the final choice. The winner was announced on September 3, 2021, which concluded the competition and revealed the new official flag of Walla Walla. This was a sign of the city's commitment to engaging its citizens in shaping its civic identity.
